Second Grader Makes Donation Instead of Getting Presents

For her eighth birthday, Talia Holmes, of Lucas, made a $300 donation to the Frisco nonprofit Becky’s Hope Horse Rescue.

An 8-year-old second grader made a $300 donation to a Frisco nonprofit Wednesday.

At her birthday party a few days before, Talia Holmes had asked friends to not buy presents, but instead, to make a donation to the rescue organization Becky's Hope Horse Rescue.

"You can help more horses and people," said Holmes, about why making a donation felt better than accepting presents. "It's because you're donating it from your heart."

Becky's Hope takes care of two potbellied pigs, six feral barn cats, and 23 abused, neglected and abandoned horses.

They've discovered a few of their newer rescues may be expecting foals.

According to director Lari McConegly, Talia's donation will help feed three horses for one month this winter.

"I'm just flabbergasted that a young girl would think of that, to be so giving," McConegly added. "It just amazes me."

Becky's Hope runs its budget entirely from donations. 100 percent of its staff hours are from volunteer labor.
