Ride-Hailing Companies Raise Rates for New Year's Eve

If you’re worried about driving on New Year’s Eve plan on getting a car service, but beware of price hikes.

If you're thinking of going out for New Year's Eve, make sure you don't drink and drive. There are plenty of options in North Texas to get you home safely.

New Year's Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year for ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft.

Thousands of people will use the apps late Thursday and early Friday to opt out of driving.

"So if it's an Uber or a cab it doesn't really matter, I just want to get where I need to be," said Josh Laker.

Uber is a convenient option. All you do is tap the app.

"It texts you when it's there so you don't have to go down and wait outside, and obviously no drinking and driving, so it's great," said Kaelin Roberts.

But on New Year's Eve the app uses surge pricing during peak times of midnight to 3 a.m.

Some people said Thursday they were familiar with this practice.

"We were kind of expecting that a little bit," said couple Rod Rodriguez and Amber Obrien.

Others, like Moody Duff, were caught off guard to learn of the New Year's Eve rates.

"Huh, I'm going to have to think about that because I did not know that," Duff said.

Uber's price hike helps other companies compete for customers.

"This is the time of the year when it's nonstop," said Shanequa Clark, with Cowboy Cab.

The Dallas cab company won't change prices and also has an app you can download to request a ride.
