Officer Injured, Suspect Dead of Apparent Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound, Police Say

A man was killed by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Saturday night after he fired at officers, striking one in the hand, Dallas police say.

The incident started at about 7:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of South Westmoreland Road, when officers saw a man who was wanted for two felonies, according to the Dallas Police Department.

When officers tried to arrest the man, he fled the scene in a pickup truck before he crashed at the corner of Westmoreland Road and Texas Drive, police said.

Police said the man got out of the truck and exchanged gunfire with officers, striking one in the hand.

The suspect, a 27-year-old, then fled the scene on foot and when additional officers arrived to search for him, they ultimately located him in the backyard of a residence with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The injured officer was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
