Man Gets Life for Killing Corpus Christi Store Owner

A South Texas man must serve life in prison without parole for the fatal shooting of a convenience store owner during a holdup.

Daniel Garcia apologized to the victim's family after he was sentenced Thursday in Corpus Christi.

Jurors earlier convicted the 27-year-old Garcia of capital murder in the 2014 killing of 59-year-old Mostafa "Ben" Bighamian. The victim was gunned down in his Corpus Christi store.

Garcia testified he'd been smoking synthetic marijuana, ran out of drugs and needed cash to buy more.

Prosecutors sought the death penalty, but jurors opted for life behind bars without parole for Garcia.

Garcia was also convicted of aggravated assault, for pointing a gun at the victim's daughter during the robbery, and sentenced to 75 years for that crime.
