Granbury Police Officer Injured in Shootout Returns to Work

A Granbury police officer wounded during a shootout in late June is back on the job.

Officer Chad Davis was shot in the upper right arm by Ricky Don McCommas, who shot and killed a Hood County sheriff's deputy only minutes earlier.

Davis returned to duty Monday, four months after the shooting. He's restricted to light duty as he continues to heal.

"It's great to be back," he said. "It's not where I want to be, of course, because I'm ready to be on the streets."

Davis said he's still discovering more wounds from the shootout.

"Last week, I had a little spot right here on my face that's been bothering me," he said. "I just messed with it -- I thought I had a skin growth or something -- and I pulled a piece of lead right out of my face right there."

Davis continues to have physical therapy six hours per week as he tries to regain full movement in his arm and left knee.

"I've never had a broken bone prior to this, and now I've got a shattered bone," he said. "It's fractured, but it's really something that therapy is really working."

He could have more knee surgery ahead, but doctors first want to see how he responds to the therapy.

McCommas, a sexual assault suspect, was killed in a shootout with law enforcement near Granbury City Hall after killing Sgt. Lance McLean outside a Granbury home. McLean had responded to a disturbance call at the home.

Davis was injured during the shootout near City Hall. He said he doesn't remember much about the shootout but will always remember McLane, a friend. He wears a wristband with McLane's name and "Hood County end of watch 29 June of 2013" on it.

"I guess when God wants you to go, it's your time, but I've thought about it a bunch," he said. "Probably for the first month, I couldn't sleep. It was pretty rough."
