A surprise gift was left in a Salvation Army kettle for the second year in a row.
Another valuable gold coin has popped up in a Salvation Army red kettle -- and this time it happened in Dallas.
The gold coin, a 1-ounce South African Krugerrand worth an estimated $1,600, was dropped into the red kettle at the Walgreens on Preston Road on Friday.
The coin was wrapped in a note that appeared to be written by a woman. In the note, the writer specifically asked NBC 5 to report that the coin was donated to honor the person's mother, Barbara, as well as to seek prayers for the person's lost love, Kameron.
This holiday season, 1-ounce Krugerrand coins have been left in Houston and Florida. In past donations, the coins were wrapped in $1 bills with the message: "A child is born, Jesus!"
The Krugerrand coin is common and one of the more popular ways people are investing in gold bullion.
Since 1970, more than 54 million Krugerrands have been put into circulation in either 1 oz., 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz., or 1/10 oz. weights.
