Family Mourns “Ms. Minnie”, Inspiration Behind Minnie's Food Pantry

Family and friends celebrated the life of Minnie Hawthorne-Ewing on Wednesday. A pastor for decades, Hawthorne-Ewing is the inspiration and namesake behind Minnie’s Food Pantry in Plano.

On Wednesday, family and friends said goodbye to the woman who inspired Minnie’s Food Pantry.

Minnie Hawthorne-Ewing, known as “Ms. Minnie” to thousands, passed away Thursday, May 7.

Before services at the Potter’s House in Frisco, daughter Cheryl Jackson said before her passing, Hawthorne-Ewing left each of her children with an assignment to carry her work forward.

Pastor Hawthorne-Ewing was a minister for more than four decades, according to her family, establishing Helen’s House, an outreach that served thousands of families with food and clothing.

Jackson says over the past week, she and her siblings have been overwhelmed by stories of their mother’s good works.

“Everything we hear from everyone is just how much she impacted their lives,” she said.

Minnie’s Food Pantry on Parker Rd in Plano will be closed through Friday as the family grieves.

However, Jackson says when they reopen Saturday, they’ll be renewed by their mother’s call to serve.

“We hear her voice even louder,” Jackson said. “It says do more, give more. I’ve done what I was called to do. She’s gone, but the mission doesn’t die.”

Hawthorne-Ewing was 69 years old.
