Explosion Causes Semitrailer Collision on I-35E

An explosion caused two semitrailers to collide, shutting down northbound Interstate 35E near Parkerville Road in Lancaster early Tuesday morning, police say.

Police said they shut down Interstate 35E in Lancaster following a wreck involving two semitrailers Tuesday morning.[[298110541,C]]

The driver of a semitrailer transporting tires north on I-35E told police something exploded in his trailer at about 2:30 a.m. Police said he then hit the median, drove across three lanes of traffic and collided with another semitrailer near Parkerville Road.

The semi with the explosion caught fire. It was carrying tires.

The driver of the first semi suffered minor injures. No other injuries were reported.

As of 5 a.m., police said they expect the freeway to be shut down for two to three more hours. The service road was reopened just before 5:30 a.m.
