Starting August 18, mass transit commuters can take the DART Orange Line to DFW Airport’s A Terminal. DART officials expect around 1,200 daily riders initially, most of them being airport employees. Airport officials say this has been a vision for 40 years.
North Texas is just weeks away from having the country's longest light rail system connecting to the country's fourth busiest airport.
DFW International Airport will become the last stop when the five-mile extension on the Orange Line will bring commuters from Irving.
"It's a big day for North Texas. Because this really does connect a lot of people to a major employment center. It connects people to the world quite frankly," said DART President & Executive Director Gary Thomas.
Jim Crites, DFW Airport's Executive Vice President of Operations, said bringing a mass transit system like the Orange Line has been a vision since the airport opened 40 years ago.
"DFW is now a global superhub, and with that, comes the demand for this multi-modal rail service," he said. "Our international customers come from airports [where] every one of them has rail access down to their city center. So we mark today as, we join the ranks of Atlanta and Chicago and the other 17 superhubs throughout the world to meet our customer's expectations."
