The Denton City Council voted 5-2 to approve incentives for a proposed Buc-ee's travel center at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday. The new Buc-ee's will be built on a 38-acre tract near Interstate 35E and Texas Loop 288 just south of Golden Triangle Mall.

"The 96 percent of the people that go there that aren’t from here and spend that money. We get their money, but we don’t have to provide them services," Denton City Council Member Greg Johnson said.

Bu-cee's developer and owner Arch "Beaver" Aplin III said he would abandon the deal if he didn't receive tax breaks to help fund the road expansions and improvements necessary to make the project work.

There has been loud opposition to the project from residents who have property bordering the proposed site. Residents were split about 80-20 in opposition to the incentives.

"My concern is when I look out my back windows, am I going to see the back of the building?" resident Jeremy Moon said.

Moon said that talking with Aplin assuaged his concern.

"I trust that he’s going to take our input and he would create a buffer zone that would prevent that from happening," Moon said.

NBC 5's Ellen Bryan and Brian Scott contributed to this report.
