Dallas police officers were called to the Gables Park 17 apartments on the 1700 block of Cedar Springs Road near North Akard Street at about 7:49 p.m.

Once inside officers found a 35-year-old woman dead from an apparent gunshot wound. The woman's identity will be released after her next of kin have been notified of her death.

Investigators said car crashes reported at three nearby intersections may have been caused by the killer fleeing the area.

Residents of Gables Park told NBC 5 that the building is very secure and that access to the garage and residential floors is granted only with a key fob.

"You feel like you're safe, especially in a building like that, this is pretty high security," Gables Park resident Eric Peay said. "You can't even go visit a friend on another floor -- you have to have your own key fob. You just expect to feel more safe."

At this time police have not named a suspect in the woman's murder and have revealed no motive in the slaying. Investigators ask anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Dallas Police Department's Homicide/Special Investigations Unit at 214-671-3584.

NBC 5's Bianca Castro and Ellen Bryan contributed to this report.
