Cruz: ‘Don't Mess With Texas' Applies to Democrats

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) speaks to a crowd of Republican supporters at a rally in Austin following the election of several Republican candidates to statewide offices on Nov. 4, 2014.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz says the organizers who hoped to bolster Democrats have been turned back with a resounding and familiar message: "Don't mess with Texas."

Cruz spoke Tuesday night at the victory party of Governor-elect Greg Abbott, who headlined a Republican sweep of Texas' statewide offices. Cruz said Abbott "has the heart of a lion."

Cruz worked for Abbott in the Texas attorney general's office, and the two remain close friends and political allies.

Speaking of what he called the Texas ethos, Cruz said: "Give me a horse and a gun and an open plain and we can conquer the world."
