Crowds, Traffic, Food are Hallmark of Holidays

Forget camping out for Black Friday sales, people on Wednesday were lining up for what’s really important on Thanksgiving: the food.

A dip in gas prices gives drivers something to be thankful for this holiday as 3.3 million Texans are expected to travel by car this Thanksgiving, according to AAA Texas.

They predict 3.6 million Texans will go farther than 50 miles from home during the Thanksgiving holiday – making this year the highest holiday travel volume since 2007.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport expects 188,000 people to pass through the airport on Wednesday, but even more are expected Sunday and Monday.

Many North Texans who are not traveling spent Wednesday preparing to feed family and friends.

The line around Honey Baked Ham in Arlington wrapped around the building as some waited for about an hour to pick up their Thanksgiving centerpiece.

“Last 10 years I’ve always got hams,” said Bob McDonald. “And this was the longest wait I’ve ever had. I don’t know if it was a timing issue or what, but this was my longest wait.”

Others like Eddy Gonzales from Arlington and his brother, Ernest, from Kansas spent the day setting up their tailgate at AT&T Stadium for Thursday's Dallas Cowboys game.

“This is the first time we’ve done the actual Thanksgiving here,” Eddy Gonzales said. “We’re looking forward to it.”

The Gonzales family showed up at AT&T Stadium at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday hoping to be the first in line only to find around 20 other RVs ahead of them.
