‘Clear the Shelters' in North Texas by Giving a Pet a Loving Home

NBC 5 & Telemundo 39 hold 'Clear the Shelters' pet adoption day on Aug. 15, find participating shelters in the map below

Thousands of animals in our area are in need of homes. That's why NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 are partnering with more than 50 shelters throughout the region to help find these animals permanent loving homes. Animals range from puppies and kittens to snuggly adult dogs and cats.

This is Echo , 8 month a old, I rescued him on a drug house call in a high crime area. I am a Dallas police officer. I called animal control to take him that day, as we usual do. I called animal control a few days later and was advised he is scheduled to be euthanized. We picked him up that day, and he is living the good life!!! We can tell he was abused, but is doing great now. He swam with a 3 year old toddler this week end, and knew to use caution. He is so smart. My vet said he is a German Shepherd and Lab mix. You wouldn't believe how many of my fellow officers adopt pets based on calls for service.

My Empty The Shelter Rescue Dog Don't know if you're interested, but here's the story of Grace, my coonhound mix.I found her at the Animal Care & Control Center in Ft Worth last September on Empty The Shelter Day. She was literally the last dog I looked at. I said if I can't find a dog here, I'm going home.I knew she had a poor chance of being adopted. She lay motionless on her pad, utterly depressed and defeated. She wouldn't respond to gentle voices or petting. Her tail was tucked under, never wagging. She had been spayed the day before, and had obviously had had puppies recently. Her card description had no name, only that she was a stray.I tried to walk her a little. She would take a few steps, then just collapse to the ground in the same depressed defeat. She was very thin, her coat was dry and dull, her skin was flaky. She had many recent tick bite scabs around her neck and chest. She had early signs of eye infection. Now I knew no one would take her. I had to have her.We carried her to the car and she crouched in the backseat floorboard, making herself small as possible. I have 9 hounds at home, but they showed little interest in her because she just cowered on the ground. For a week, I kept her in the den where it was quiet (pic 1), fed her chicken and rice in small amounts frequently, and doctored her pain, fever, and eyes. The whole time she cowered in her bed, not moving. I had to almost carry her outside for bathroom trips. On day three, she wagged her tail. She was very skinny, (pic 2) so it took weeks-months to put weight on her. Gradually I let her start socializing and eating with the other dogs. That's when I found out she'd been abused. I could not pick up a long stick without her shrinking and running away. If I made a throwing motion, even with a tennis ball, she cowered and ran. It broke my heart. She was fearful of men she didn't know. Now the good part. She craves love and affection, especially belly rubs. She's very protective of me. She loves to play with toys, throwing h

ClearTheShelters - Henry This is Henry. He is a two year old Boston Terrier/Chihuahua mix. We saw him on the NBC5 Sunday morning show during the HSNT pet segment last August and fell in love immediately. Later that week we adopted him from the HSNT location on East Lancaster. Within the first year of his life, he was abandoned and taken in as a stray only to be surrendered to the shelter after less than one month. When we got him, he was ill and suffered from separation anxiety. But he's made great progress this year. Henry is an amazing dog and a huge part of our family. We are so lucky to have found him and can't imagine life without our little bud. Steven and Kristi MooreFort WorthSent from Outlook

Clear the shelters These are my Pyrenees dogs I got from Bluebonnet Animal Rescue Network. They specialize in rehabilitating and training certain breeds to protect small livestock. These dogs protect a flock of 100 sheep and a dozen chickens from coyotes, bobcats and foxes. Bailey (yawning), Sam (standing), his brother Smitty below and Zoie. They are also pals w Rosie who you aired a couple of years ago on Dog Days of Summer. She was a huge dog lounging in a fifty gallon water tub. Good luck clearing the shelters hope you can use this. Sam at 2 This is my son's dog, Sam. We found her at the Mesquite Animal Shelter, not barking or jumping -- just looking thoughtfully out the window like she was expecting us. She went from a very skinny fourteen pound pup to an enormous seventy pound dog and quite by coincidence, Sam is celebrating her second birthday on August 15th, Clear The Shelter day. If Sam were to have a wish on her birthday cake (which she doesn't have, she prefers really big rawhide bones), I'm sure she would wish other shelter dogs to find their forever homes as well.

My rescue - Sadie I had been without a dog for several years when last April I decided I wanted a dog for protection and companionship. In the past I've owned both a Golden Retriever and a Great Pyrenees. They are both wonderful breeds, so I started looking for a combination - a Golden/Pyr. I thought I wanted a puppy and contacted Lone Star Pyrs and Paws about one I saw on their website. After one night with the 4 month old puppy, I took her back and asked for an older dog. They had just gotten Sadie from a kill shelter and was having trouble finding a home for her because she was 8 years old. She was super skinny, missing teeth and wasn't fond of men. I brought her home last April and she's the best friend I could ever hope to have. I wish more people would adopt older dogs.

Clear The Shelter Shadow was adopted from the Arlington Animal Shelter. He was extremely energetic and was returned to the shelter by the first family that adopted him. We understood that Shadow needed to have an outlet for his energy, so we made sure he got plenty of exercise every day, and he quickly developed into a wonderful pet for our household. He will live out his happy life with Mark and Mary Boone in Arlington.

3 rescue dogs chilling in doors My 3 rescue dogs tend to want to stay indoors on these hot days. Zoe, the Dane, was abandoned in the backyard of a home. She is my velcro dog. Won't wander far from me at all. Maya the middle dog was hit by a car and had a broken pelvis and right front leg. Two vets treated her pro bono and she became our dog. She runs like a bullet today. Andy the small dashhound has only 3 feet, missing right hind foot. Was suppose to have a issue with big dogs, but he and Zoe are inseparable. She watches over him like a dotting mother. The 3 dogs keep us entertained and young and on our toes. We have had them for over 6 years and they will protect us with their lives. After 3 children, 3 dogs are easy to take care of.Glenn FurthPlano, TX

HAN LUKE AND PRINCESS These are our babies which we adopted from our local shelter. My baby boy Luke, on the far left has been through several surgeries but has always remained his lovable self.

On Saturday, Aug. 15, NBC-owned stations are taking part in "Clear the Shelters" Day, an initiative to help find new homes for cats and dogs waiting to be adopted.

Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. participating shelters have agreed to waive all adoption fees* (spay/neuter fee) that day in hopes of attracting even more people interested in giving a furry friend a forever home. However, other shelter fees may still apply.

Because my wife and kids saw so many #ClearTheShelters stories on NBC 5, I decided to adopt Rosie the boxer after she visited the station. Newy Scruggs, NBC 5 Sports Director
I adopted Tipper from the Humane Society. She was incredibly empathic, and was by my side through my entire breast cancer battle. It was as though she knew she’d done her job; just months after I went into remission she peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge. I don’t know how anyone battles the big C without a good dog. Mike and I had adopted a bulldog from the Lone Star Bulldog rescue, Neiman, and had him for 10 years. After Neiman passed, we were not going to adopt another dog for a while, but after a month our house was too quiet, so we decided to adopt again from the Lone Star Bulldog club and that’s when we rescued Ethel. Bulldogs can’t take the heat. Her only shade was an over turned metal boat on saw horses. When the Lone Star Bulldog rescue picked her up, she was so dirty they didn’t know she was a white bulldog. When we got Ethel, I had to drag her outside to go to the restroom. After about a week, she realized we would let her in and she’s been great ever since. She loves, loves, loves to play fetch with you. She is such a joy! Martha Stallard - NBC 5/T39 Human Resources

The ultimate goal of the event is to help as many animals as possible find their perfect match. Last year, North Texans helped us find forever homes for more than 2,200 animals.

Surprisingly, only about 20 percent of people adopting a pet choose a shelter animal. No shelter wants to see any animals caged.

Thousands of animals in our area are in need of homes. That’s why NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 are partnering with more than 50 shelters throughout the region to help find these animals permanent loving homes.

Finding these pets quality homes is even more critical during the summer after the populations at shelters swell due to abandoned and surrendered pets following spring births.

If you adopt a pet on Saturday, share your photo include @NBCDFW and the hashtag #ClearTheShelters or email your photo to isee@nbcdfw.com. Include your name, your pet's name and the name of the shelter!

Dax - one of our special needs shelter rescue cats We rescued Dax on Christmas Eve 2012 after we saw him at our local Petsmart. He was born with two deformed back legs, so when he walks it is like trying to walk on your elbows! He doesn't know that he is not a normal cat, though. He can leap or climb as high as our kitchen island & the back of our couch. He gets along great with the rescued feral kitten we adopted in 2013. Her name is Patti, & she has only 1 1/2 back legs, yet she is as flowing & graceful as a ballerina. Dax & Patti tear around the house like a couple of fire engines! Both of our precious rescues bring us unimaginable joy & peace!

Abigaile Our dear Abigaile was living in a park for her first year taking care of two littermates. She had a broken leg and a split paw and was pregnant. A nurse found them took them to the vet and the vet called us. Our baby we'd had for 16years had just been put to sleep two days before so it was a blessing to us. She loves clothes and is such a sweet soul.

Karma This sweet pup was a rescue pup. This was her first day at the vet. Her name is Karma. Her adoptive family worked at a doggie daycare in Plano Texas. She had an amazing life of spending her days with her parents at work playing with other dogs all day long. Unfortunately, her parents turned to drugs and Karma lost her home. Her parents drug her from hotel to hotel and sometimes slept on the street. Karma found herself in the shelter when the Plano police raided her parents hotel room. Apparently they were breaking into houses, etc. to steal to support their drug habit. Karma needs a home and we would love to get her some face time and perhaps a quick 1 minute airtime. We know her family is out there. Look at those precious eyes. Karma is obviously great with other dogs and is good with cats too. She is trained and a sweet heart. She's a little over a year old. She's spayed and UTD on vaccinations. In case you are wondering, that hole in her chest was from a dog bite/attack while out on the streets. She is healed now. Can you PLEASE help us help her! Thank you for your consideration. Candi Mehary 214-284-7131

Hickory We adopted Hickory from the shelter in Ft. Worth 13 years ago. He was 10 weeks old and was our son Dell's birthday present. We took Dell to the shelter to pick out a dog. HICKORY picked HIM. :) He's older now but still loves his morning walk, and when he thinks Penny the dachshund is not behaving during that walk she gets a quick "RUFF!" from him. :)

Clear the Shelter - Pet pictures Probably 5 years ago, my husband called me on his way to work and had heard on the radio that it was adapt a cat month at the shelter. He went to look that day, specifically looking for a darker Tabby, but we ended up with two! Trixie and Toby are both great cats & very sweet and extremely social! We were told that they came from the same litter so I love the fact that we could keep them together. They are our first pets together as well.

Lacie Lacie is our sweet loveable and spoiled rescue dog. She rescued us almost a year ago. She now rules her queendom and I think we are her servants. Although she is spoiled she is really a good dog and helped us when we had to let our 17 plus year old dog pass on. She is a snuggle bunny and we both eat it up. As you can see in this picture she is on one of her many thrones.

Our rescues We have adopted rescues since 1984, all from Whippet Rescue. We first had one, then adopted another, then always had 2 at a time, until one died and left one that didn't want a companion. Here are all the ones we have had in the past, and the ones we have now. We realize you won't use all these photos, or all our story. However, I want you all at the station to see what our story has been, and you can decide to use any of our photos you deem worthy of showing. Here are the ones from the past: Cedric, our first

Clear the shelters #cleartheshelters Here is our sweet girl Panther. My husband went to get bottled waters one hot July day 2 years ago. She was so hot, standing on the pavement, knowing she shouldn't go in, but wanting to. The store clerks were shooing her out. He scooped her up, brought her home, and the rest is history. She found her 'furever' home. She is a 'champion' Frisbee catcher, her best friend is our labrador, Bear, and I can't imagine our lives without her! Kelly and Danny James Alvarado

Our shelter rescue! This is our Titan. We saw him on the Sulphur Springs Shelter Facebook page back in June of 2014 And fell in love with that adorable face. (2 pictures on the left) We went to the shelter the next day and adopted him! He was dirty and covered in fleas, barely weighing 4 pounds. 1 year later.. (pictured on the right) Titan now weighs a healthy 90 pounds. He is the best family dog we could have asked for. That is my 3 year old daughter Desirea in the picture with him. Thank you for the opportunity to share our shelter rescue with everyone. I encourage everyone to check your local shelters and save a life. They may have the dog that would be the perfect fit for your family. Thank you, sincerely Malorie Padron Sulphur Springs, Tx.

Rescued pet photo Our boy Luke was dumped outside a home improvement store in Gun Barrel City, Texas in 2008. He waited patiently for hours in 100 degree heat waiting for his owner who had abandoned him. Fortunately he was rescued by Tina Hamilton of Happy Tails, a rescue service that has placed more than 860 pets into new homes. Luke had heart worms. He was treated and listed for adoption. He has been our loving boy for over 7 years. He is an incredible dog. And really appreciates his new home. Tom VanHootegem 3500 Louis Drive Plano, Tx 75023

my rescue story These pretty girls are Sweetie and Hazel. Both rescues. Sweetie is an American bulldog found starving on the streets of Beeville. It took her six months for her foster mom to find her a forever home. She drove the 6+ hour drive from Beeville to Fort Worth and brought Sweetie along with her. It was love at first sight. Hazel is a pitbull rescued from the euthanasia list at the Chuck Silcox Animal Care + Control center in Fort Worth. She had been in and out of the shelter for 8 months. She is HW positive. We found out she had a very mild case but her vet bills total around to $1300 (we are raising money on gofundme). These girls, however, lighten our life up and love eachother and their home with everything they have. They are so friendly and well-behaved and their stories make them that much more unique.
