A man is hospitalized after police say he opened fire at Vandergriff Honda in Arlington Thursday evening.

An armed man shot by Arlington Police Thursday evening after reports of a shootout at a car dealership has been identified as 25-year-old Abbas Al-Mutairy.

Arlington Police said officers were sent to Vandergriff Honda along the Interstate 20 frontage road between Cooper Street and Matlock Road at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday on reports that an armed man was firing at the building.

Police said when they arrived on scene, they "engaged him" and, "based on the suspect's actions, multiple officers fired their service weapons, striking the suspect," according to a press release.

Cell phone video obtained by NBC 5 shows Al-Mutairy in the parking lot, holding a gun.

An employee at the dealership told NBC 5's Vince Sims that a former employee who had recently been fired walked into the new car area with a long-style rifle.

Arlington Police later confirmed that Al-Mutairy was a former employee who had recently been fired.

"I heard one of my friends say, 'Hey, he has a gun.' I look up and look him right in the face and he has a blank, very calm face. [He] points the gun, it's a big gun like an AR … he turns and just shoots right at the window," said employee David Mann. "Soon as he shot the window, of course, we run, hear about 3-4 more shots."

Mann told NBC 5 he then saw the man heading toward the service area.

"One of the service advisors has a gun, tries to defend himself, shoots back at him because he was walking toward the service area, then they get into an exchange. The whole time I'm on the phone with the police," Mann said.

Mann said when Al-Mutairy left the building he was confronted by police officers. The employee said the armed man walked toward officers, still carrying the gun, and was shot by police.

According to Arlington Police, none of the employees, customers, or police were hurt and the only person injured was the gunman.

“Crazy! It’s very crazy. That’s the only word that I can use," said Sammy Dorsey, who works at DFW Collision Center down the road.

“One of my coworkers came running in and said, ‘Hey, there’s a shooting going on,’” he recalled.

Dorsey said he worked at Vandergriff Honda for more than 20 years and still has friends there.

“I called them to check on them and they were like, ‘Yeah, there’s a shooting here, we’re buckled down, we’re hiding out,’ and this and that," Dorsey said.

He's grateful no one was hurt besides the suspect.

"It’s just a blessing that none of my older coworkers got hit," he said.

Dorsey is also grateful for divine timing. He said he had just stopped into Vandergriff Honda Thursday morning to make a service appointment for his car.

“It’s a blessing that I didn’t stop by there after work and try and set my appointment," he said. “I would’ve been in the middle of all that chaos."

Police said Al-Mutairy has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Additional charges could be filed pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Arlington Police said there are multiple investigations ongoing related to the shooting, including a criminal investigation into the incident and an administrative investigation to determine if officers followed department policy. Both investigations are standard for shootings involving police officers.
