Arlington to Receive Millions for Title 1 Campuses

Designation change to bring in $11 million in stimulus funding

The Arlington Independent School District will temporarily designate four additional schools as Title I campuses in order to receive nearly $11 million through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

Title I schools receive extra federal funds based on their high percentage of students on free and reduced-price lunches. The grant money can be used to buy computers and other educational material.

Sam Houston High School, Gunn Junior High School and Bryant and Starrett elementaries will be granted Title I status for two years. Pope Elementary is also being designated a Title I campus, but not on a temporary basis.

Pope's addition will bring the number of Title I campuses in the district to 38.

The purpose of Title 1, Part A is to enable schools to provide additional opportunities for students to acquire the knowledge and skills contained in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and to meet the standards of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, according to a statement on the AISD Web site.
