“American Sniper” Earns Best Picture, Best Actor Nominations

Film takes six Academy Award nominations

A special screening of the film “American Sniper” was held in Plano Wednesday night. The movie is about the life and death of America’s deadliest sniper, Chris Kyle.

Actor Bradley Cooper has praised veterans during a North Texas showing of his new movie "American Sniper" Wednesday, a day before he was nominated for best actor in a motion picture for playing the lead role.

Cooper was on hand Wednesday night in Plano, along with Taya Kyle, the widow of Chris Kyle, the sniper he portrays.

Cooper, who on Thursday was nominated for an Academy Award for lead actor in a motion picture, says the biggest challenge of the film was trying to get it right.

The film, which also received five other nominations including one for best picture, film editing, sound editing, sound mixing and writing, is based on Chris Kyle's 2012 memoir of the same name.

Kyle, who served in Iraq, was an ex-Navy SEAL considered to be the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history. Kyle and a friend were killed in 2013 at a Texas shooting range in gunfire blamed on an ex-Marine, who awaits trial.

"American Sniper," also nominated for an Oscar for best picture, opens nationwide Friday.
