Airport Safety Concerns in North Texas

The Fort Lauderdale shooting happened in a baggage claim area – in what’s known as the non-sterile side of the airport. That means people can enter the area without being checked for weapons — it’s one of the least secure parts of an airport terminal. A year ago, NBC 5 investigates obtained internal records at dfw airport showing police there had expressed concerns about an “insufficient” number of uniformed officers to patrol the most public areas of the airport. The records showed the police department had been asking for more officers. On Friday, D/FW Airport officials declined to answer questions about whether more officers have been hired – saying the airport does not publicly discuss security operations. However, D/FW’s 2017 budget includes $5 million of additional money which will be used to provide an increased security presence.
