Lawyers representing immigrant parents separated from their children during the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance crackdown are demanding more information about why only about half of minors under the age of 5 are being reunited with their families.
In a late Thursday court filing, the American Civil Liberties Union asked a federal judge to order the government to give attorneys more specific reasons as to why a parent was excluded from eligibility for a reunion.
They also noted that the reunion process has been so flawed that there have been "significant problems" with the reunions. One immigrant woman who was freed was left alone at a bus stop with her children, one of whom was six months old. Another parent was transported to a series of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement locations with no notice to her attorneys and ICE refused to allow a lawyer to be present at the family reunion, the court filing said.
