Abilene Woman Slain, Newborn Hurt, Suspect Held

Police say a woman found slain at a West Texas home still clutched her 2-week-old son who was wounded in the gunfire blamed on her boyfriend -- the baby's father.

Abilene police on Thursday said the suspect remains hospitalized in critical condition with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Sgt. Lynn Beard says the man will face murder and injury to a child charges over Wednesday night's shootings at an apartment.

Beard says the baby is being treated for a hand wound from the same round that killed 22-year-old Makayla Bunting.

Officers responded to a 911 call from one of Bunting's relatives. Police thought her boyfriend was dead but he regained consciousness and attacked officers, who subdued him using a Taser.

The couple's 4-year-old daughter was nearby but uninjured.
