Five people were wounded, including a 15-year-old boy, in a shooting Friday night in Deep Ellum, Dallas police say.

Officers responded at about 11:08 p.m. to the 2600 block of Elm Street, where they found three males and one woman with gunshot wounds who were transported to a local hospital.

While there, officers learned a fifth person, an adult man, had also been shot and took himself to the hospital, police said.

The 15-year-old boy was in critical condition and the four other people, all adults, had injuries not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

Jackie Blanchard is a server at Cafe Salsera on Elm Street. The restaurant reopened its dining room services Friday night. Blanchard said she was getting water for a table when the shooting happened.

"By the time I got back up, everyone was over the balcony peeking over and I had no idea what happened until I peaked down there and saw the man on the ground and all the cops and fire trucks," Blanchard recalled. "I was like 'Oh, my goodness.' We always hear about shootings in Deep Ellum, but it’s always farther. It’s never happened right in front of me, so it’s really eye-opening to the crime that’s in this area."

The shooting on Friday night was addressed by Dallas City Council member Adam Medrano on Facebook Saturday afternoon.

"I’m aware of the issues and concerns in the Central Business District (CBD) and Deep Ellum. I am in communication with DPD, City Staff and Neighborhood Leaders and we are working together to create a plan that will best serve all downtown residents, business owners and the entire city," Medrano wrote.

The post also included action items Medrano said he was working on, including the temporary removal scooters from the CBD and Deep Ellum within 10 days as of Friday, Aug. 28.

"Additionally, I have requested extra police presence/patrol in CBD/DE, requested review of the teen curfew ordinance to stop late night gatherings, and we will be working towards a safety plan to keep CBD/Deep Ellum safe," Medrano wrote.

Blanchard said she felt a heavier police presence could help businesses as they continue to try and get back on track.

"People are just trying to get to where they’re going and have a drink or have some fun in Deep Ellum, but I think people that are hanging out on the streets or causing trouble are ruining that and scaring people away from this general area," she said.

Dallas police Senior Cpl. Melinda Gutierrez said the department had extra officers in Deep Ellum on Friday night and would continue to have additional resources in the area.

No one was in custody Sunday, and police did not know the motive for the shooting.
