Texas Two-Step Here to Stay

The Texas Democratic Party is keeping its complicated presidential delegate system known as the Texas Two-Step.

Party activists debated the two-step system passionately Saturday at their state convention, but overwhelmingly opted to keep it.

In the hybrid system, Democratic voters cast ballots in a primary, but can help their candidate further by attending a caucus at night.

Opponents said it's unfair to the elderly, handicapped and people who work at night and can't make the caucus.

State Sen. Royce West, a Dallas Democrat who oversaw public hearings on the issue, urged the party to keep the 25-year-old system because it gets more people involved in politics.

The system came under fire after the close 2008 primary battle between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.
