Child-care Nonprofit Employee Sentenced for Embezzling Federal Funds

A former employee for Dallas-based nonprofit Child Care Group was sentenced to nine months in prison this month after stealing more than $100,000 in federal funds from the company.From April 2011 to January 2015, Evetta Galloway Griffin of Grand Prairie billed around 100 fraudulent invoices for printing services to Child Care Group, receiving close to $115,000 from the scheme.Griffin's embezzlement was brought up to the Texas Workforce Commission, who investigated the case with the inspector general and the Office of United States Attorneys. The investigation found that the money Griffin stole came from federal funds intended for Head Start and the Child Care and Development Fund, both of which benefit young children from low-income families.In December, Griffin pleaded guilty to one count of theft or bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds. This month, she was ordered to pay $129,196.48 in restitution and sentenced to nine months in prison, to start in September.According to public records obtained by the Texas Tribune, Griffin worked for the Dallas County Community College District after leaving Child Care Group in 2015.  Continue reading...
