After Tape Surfaces, Fort Worth Baptist Seminary's Leader Says He Never Told Women to Stay With Abusers

The president of Fort Worth's Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary who can be heard in an 18-year-old recording telling a woman "you have to do what you can at home to be submissive in every way" says he never suggested that battered women should stay with their abusers.Paige Patterson released a statement Sunday calling the outcry over the recording, which resurfaced online recently, "deliberate misrepresentation" of his position and pointing to "the hatred that lies behind much of" that mischaracterization.In the recording from 2000, which has previously appeared online, Patterson is being interviewed about the Biblical issue of submission.
