Austin Officer Who Fatally Shot Suspect Who Shot Him ID'd

Austin police have identified an officer who was shot and injured during a fatal confrontation with a car burglary suspect.

Police announced Monday that Officer Armando Perez has been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Perez, who was hospitalized after the shooting, has been with the Austin police department for 9 1/2 years.

Police say the Sunday shooting happened when Perez and a security guard tried to restrain the suspect in a parking lot after he had fled a downtown condominium complex where he had been seen breaking into cars.

Police say the suspect shot Perez in the stomach and the officer then fired back. The suspect died at the scene.

Authorities say the 25-year-old suspect's name won't be released until his family has been notified.
