New Record Low Set Friday

New record low temperature recorded at DFW Airport

Record-cold temperatures and gusty winds in North Texas made May feel more like winter Friday.

The northwestern half of the state was under a freeze warning Thursday night and Friday morning, while the Texas Panhandle faced a hard freeze.

Just after 6:30 a.m. Friday, the temperature at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport plunged to 39 degrees, breaking the old record low of 41 degrees set in 1954.

The big chill was the result of an unusually late cold front that moved into North Texas Thursday. Gusty winds only made the cold more penetrating, bringing wind chills in the 20s overnight.

A wind advisory was issued for most of North Texas until 4 p.m. and Meteorologist Grant Johnston called for wind gusts up to 30 mph. Johnston forecasted a high of 61 degrees for Friday but said the wind chill would make it feel like we were in the 50s.

On Thursday night approximately 2,000 people were without power in the Dallas-Fort Worth area because of high winds. Oncor said it expected to restore power by 11 p.m. By 9 a.m. Friday less than 150 people were without power according to Oncor's website.
