Work And Fun Continues Despite Triple Digit Heat

Finishing up the covered walkway at Dallas ISD's shiny, new Billy Earl Dade Middle School in South Dallas crews battled the oppressive shine of the sun Saturday afternoon.

"Just try to stay cool, but it's hard," said Mike Wirth of AVAdek, the Houston-based company doing the work.

The trio takes frequent sips of water and sports drink and their heads and necks are covered.  Plus the more progress they make on the covered walkway the more shade they create.

"So it definitely helps to build our own shade because the sun is just unbearable," said Wirth.

According to NBC 5 Chief Meteorologist David Finfrock, Saturday's official high temperature at DFW International Airport was 100 degrees.

Besides those few that have to be out in this heat there are hundreds like at Klyde Warren Park that want to be out in it, but even the wanna-be's know that have to be careful.

"Sunscreen.  A lot of sunscreen," said mom Anita Martinez.  "And keep them hydrated."

Lots of kids stay cool with a refreshing sno cone or dip in the park fountains.  Parents and grandparents keep a close eye on how everyone's doing.

"To go in and out of shade and not stand in direct sun," suggested Margaret who brought her grandson Christian to the park for the first time. "Keep the fluid in him so he doesn't dry out here.  Keep him hydrated."

A must during one of the hottest weeks of the year.
