Extreme Drought Worsens Across North Texas

No significant rain is expected any time soon



    NBC 5 Forecast: One More Decent Chance for Rain

    The new drought monitor was released Thursday morning and the news is not good.

    Despite the spotty rain earlier this week, conditions continue to worsen. An area of "extreme" drought has expanded to include nearly all of Tarrant, Parker and Hood counties.

    Much of Wise, Denton and Johnson counties are also in the same category and now a sliver of western Dallas County is in the red.

    Moderate to severe drought is in place elsewhere.

    Many cities are under watering restrictions already. We can expect more locations to be added and burn bans to continue.

    Things have worsened dramatically from one year ago. Note the statewide comparison below:

    What makes matters worse is that no significant rain is expected any time soon. Historically, August is the driest month in North Texas.
