Canton Covered By Wintry Mix A Winter Treat

Snow and ice blanketed much of Van Zandt County, keeping many people inside for much of the day. Still even the bitter cold couldn't stop some from enjoying a rare Texas treat of winter weather. (Published Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018)

The blast of wintry weather impacted areas to the east and southeast of DFW overnight Monday, covering much of the area with a thin blanket of snow or ice.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for counties to the east and south of Dallas until noon Tuesday. This is the area most likely to have additional impacts from light snow through the morning hours.

The biggest concern for the rest of the day through Wednesday will be the very cold air in place. Temperatures will struggle to reach 30 degrees Tuesday and will drop well into the teens Tuesday night. NBC 5's Grant Johnston said the forecast low of 14 will come close to the record of 12.

Some spots near the Red River could be down in the single digits overnight Tuesday night.

The rest of the week holds the promise of gradually warmer weather with temperatures climbing back toward 70 by Saturday before more seasonal temperatures return with a chance of rain on Sunday.

    Hazardous Road Conditions

Major impacts to roads was focused in areas east and southeast of Dallas, where layers of ice formed on roads, bridges and overpasses. One tweet by the Navarro County Office of Emergency Management showed a jackknifed 18-wheeler on Interstate 45 and Business 45.

Roads around DFW are generally dry and clear. East and southeast of Dallas, the roads become icy and dangerous. Please be careful if you're heading to or from that direction.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled in Texas, where frigid temperatures have left runways — and roads — dangerously icy.

Flights into Houston, San Antonio and elsewhere have been canceled. Houston is enduring 21 degrees and San Antonio stands at 30 degrees.

Police in Austin said highways in the capital are iced over and several counties opened emergency operation centers to coordinate emergency response. The cold front also brought snow to parts of North Texas, where the wind chill pushed temperatures into the single digits.
