Caution Urged on North Texas Lakes Memorial Day Weekend

Boaters heading out on North Texas lakes need to be careful, with very little rain to keep them filled lake levels are lower than they've been in years.

Lake Grapevine is more than 10 feet below normal, the lowest it has been in many years.

The City of Grapevine is hosting this year's first Friday Night Fireworks display at the lake, that means a lot of boaters will be on the water.

The lake level is so low, only five of the lake's eight boat ramps remain open Friday.

"Anybody that's going out today needs to be aware of their surroundings, needs to be aware there's going to be other obstructions in the water that there wasn't last year when they might have been here," said Natural Resources Specialist Kenneth Myers, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "Always wear your life jacket, that's going to be the one tool that's going to save your life if something happens unexpectedly. Put the life jacket on and you should be good."

Local police will also patrol along the lake, they'll be looking for people not wearing lifejackets and boaters drinking alcohol.
