Ditch Your Car, Catch a Train

DART expands with green line debut.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit will debut its Green Line train on Monday.

The rail line runs from DART's Victory station near the American Airlines Center through downtown and on to Fair Park.

The trip takes about seven minutes, but will take longer as stops in Deep Ellum and Baylor University's Medical Center are added in the next year.

The timing of the rail line opening is perfect, just weeks before the State Fair of Texas opens.

Riders will be able to take a free test ride on the Green Line on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

When DART finishes construction on the Green Line, it will run from southeast Dallas all the way up to Carrollton. DART is also ramping up construction on the new Orange Line which will branch the Green Line in northwest Dallas and serve the city of Irving in 2011. The line will be extended to DFW International Airport by 2013.

DART is also building a five mile extension of the Blue Line from Garland to Rowlett that is expected to begin operation in 2012.

DART also announced Friday it will raise single trip fares on train and bus service by a quarter.
