Revamp Your Wardrobe at Recessionista's Closet Swap

Saturday gathering in South Side's basement makes old clothes new

It's baffling to think of the clothes in closets all across the city that are totally wearable but aren't being worn. The dress that hasn't left your closet in months might not be too tight or too short. But if you wore it on a date with your ex or to a nightmare job interview and it just seems ugly now, it's time to pass it on to someone who'd think it was great.

When you're ready to purge your wardrobe of bad associations and other clutter, the latest community-minded party in the basement of South Side on Lamar provides a place where you can switch them out for duds that are new to you. The Recessionista's Closet Clothing Swap and Consignment Expo on Saturday is an outlet for women, men, and children to pull switches with gently used or new clothes, shoes, and accessories, a broad version of the clothing swaps that cater to a certain style subset.

Talisa Lavarry, an image consultant, event planner and provider of kids' self esteem and fashion camps at Dallas area rec centers, is hosting the large-scale swap.

Lavarry told us it's hard to say who'll respond to her open invitation. "I do expect there to be a whole lot more women, because that's who generally attends these kinds of events. [The demographic] is kind of hard to pinpoint, too, because people in Mercedes and BMWs have been showing up more often at resale shops in these times."

The afternoon should be pretty wild: no dressing rooms will be available, so participants are encouraged to dress to accomodate another layer. Attendees can bring and take as much as they want "within reason," a release says, and they're required to bring an item of clothing, pair of shoes or an accessory each time they enter the venue during the event, set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be some consignment and retail action as well as a fashion show. A $5 donation is encouraged.

Get a peek at what to expect on Good Morning Texas Friday when Lavarry discusses fashion in the age of recession on the show at 9 a.m. Models will don selections from one of Lavarry's favorite brand-name toting resale shops to suggest to clients, Bonton's Upscale Consignment. That shop and others will be at the swap with goods for sale.
