Redbox Users Share Freebie Codes

Company apparently doesn't mind

Users of Redbox DVD rental kiosks often share promotional codes for free movies.  It's a not-so-secret way to avoid paying Redbox's usual fee of $1 per night.

"I actually heard about it from someone who was in line with me, and he offered to let me use his code because he wasn't using it," said Angela Davis, who is a Redbox regular.

Redbox apparently doesn't mind.

"We are thrilled that so many consumers are taking advantage of Redbox promotions," a company spokesperson said.

Redbox has exploded in popularity because of its convenience and low price. Five years ago, there were just 100 Redbox kiosks.  Today, there are more than 14,000 kiosks nationwide, with thousands more on the way.

Redbox routinely e-mails codes that are good for a free one-night rental. They'll send you one immediately just for signing up on the Redbox Web site:  www.redbox.com.

"Free works for me. It works for everybody," said customer Denise Mullen, who usually rents from a Redbox kiosk outside a Walgreens store in Arlington.

Several Web sites have also sprung up where users share Redbox codes:
