As weekend road-trip destinations go you could do a lot worse than a distillery.
Houston, for example. Hey, hey, lighten up, just kidding … far as you know.
Anyway, a weekend getaway to a Texas distillery, a legal Texas distillery, leads to only one place — Garrison Brothers Distillery, somewhere between Johnson City and Fredericksburg just off highway 290 in the Hill Country.
According to the outfit’s website — and they would say this, but it is, unarguably, the best Texas-made bourbon whiskey available — they distill some bad-boy bourbon with predominately Texas-grown ingredients save for the barley.
The purpose of the road-trip would have to be the tour and tasting, which happen Wednesdays-Sundays, at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m.
A few ground rules, though: No kids, no way, no fooling; no smoking, don’t even think about it; no credit cards, which probably also means no debit cards, so take cash, plenty of cash; and no videoing because that just ticks them off (they used a different word but we're family-friendly).
They also would like it very much if you called ahead and made reservations so you don’t surprise them by showing up and “to make sure we don’t shoot you.”
So go, sip fine whiskey, and have a good time. Just don’t tick ‘em off.
