‘Mimosa' is Pantone's Pick For Color of 2009: We Disagree

A garish yellow is Pantone's pick of 2009? Yuck.

It's probably the graphic designer angle (or maybe the Project Runway fan angle...) that makes us sit up and take notice of when the Pantone company (They make colors. Seriously) declares something is the "color of the year."

This is how they describe this year's pick:
"Mimosa, a warm engaging yellow, brings hope and optimism during a time of economic uncertainty and political change. Inspired by the Mimosa tree and the sparkle of the renowned cocktail, the 2009 color of the year represents the hopeful and radiant characteristics associated with the color yellow."

Really? This is what Mimosa looks like:

We don't think this is the color for a new dress, or you're going to look like a giant banana.

It's pretty close to goldenrod, in our opinion, which could make your living room done up in "Mimosa" almost look like a summer harvest of nasty.

Yes, yes, we know this is likely just to be an accent color for most items, which will use the "color of the year" more sparingly -- but it's still a nasty yellow-orangish-brown-goldenrod mess -- and it clashes with our color scheme.

What do you think?
