Worth The Drive: Get Medieval in Mingus, Texas

Sip Scotch and shoot game at Greystone Castle

“Dungeons & Dragons” geeks and regular Joes converge with meaty All-Americans who like to shoot guns, drink Scotch whisky and go fishing at Greystone Castle in the middle of Texas. The sporting facility is located about a hundred miles west of the metroplex and welcomes all types seeking a break from the city.

The 5,000 acre ranch offers wingshooting (flying bobwhite quail, pheasant, chukar and Hungarian partridge) and mourning dove and multiple species of duck in its central flyway. Trophy whitetail deer make for quick big game targets. Multiple species of exotics (elk, sika, red stag, oryx, addix, fallow and black buck) are on premise for killing, too.

An expert guides guests on the hunt. Sound like a fair fight. Right. Guests of Greystone Castle who don’t want blood on their hands can opt for clay targets or fishing for largemouth bass and hybrid striper. Greystone Castle’s guided fishing is done from flat bottom boats and is catch and release only. Now that's more like it!

If a two hour safari ranch tour, hunting or fishing isn’t worth the drive, discerning guests can take full advantage of the castle’s five separate and unique lodges, each with four to five private suites.

There they can sample five different scotches and geek out with “Dungeons & Dragons” boardgames or a “Harry Potter” chess set. Either way, Greystone Castle is something different, with plenty of entertaining activities making it worth a drive.
