Welcome Planned for Amputees Across America

Group on transcontinental bike ride will stop in Arlington

A welcome reception at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Arlington will greet a group of amputees making a transcontinental bike ride Monday morning, June 20, 2011.

The cyclists are part of a group called Amputees Across America. It's their tenth consecutive year to ride in relays across the United States and visiting hospitals to increase public awareness of amputees as people with active lifestyles.

"We are delighted to host Amputees Across America at our hospital and celebrate the group's 10 year anniversary," said John Oliver, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Arlington chief executive officer. "Our hospital strives to provide a higher level of rehabilitative care to amputee patients. This visit provides an excellent opportunity for those patients as well as those in the community to see that a physical disability should not keep anyone from living an active lifestyle."

While in Arlington, members will visit HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Arlington patients to share stories of overcoming their amputation to live healthy, fulfilling lives. They will also visit with staff, former patients, local cycling club members and a representative from the mayor's office who will give a proclamation for Amputees Across America Day.
