The Next Nastia?

Plano's Rebecca Bross could be the next big champion.

A Plano resident leads at the Visa Gymnastics Championships under way in Dallas, and many people believe she could be the next champion to come out of the same gym that produced Olympic gold medalists Nastia Liukin and Carly Patterson.

Rebecca Bross doesn't focus on trying to duplicate the feat of Liukin, her gymnastics training partner.

"I don't really think about it too much.  I just try to do what I have to do every day," Bross said.

That approach seems to work.  After the first night of competition at the Visa Championships under way at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Bross leads in the all-around.

"I wouldn't be surprised if she's going to win the Visa Championships," said Bross' coach, Valeri Liukin. "Not at all."

If she wins, Bross would become U.S. National Champion.

It hasn't been easy getting to this point.  Bross has suffered several injuries, including a broken foot and a dislocated knee that required surgery.

"It's kind of been a long year for me," Bross said.

However, Bross said she is healed and is stronger than ever.

"You gotta get over it.  It happened," she said.

The 2012 Olympics in London are part of Bross' long-term plan.

"It's in the back of my mind.  It would be really nice.  It would be my dream come true," Bross said.
