State Fair Makes $35 Million

State Fair rakes in $35 million for 2011

Adios, Big Tex -- the State Fair of Texas is officially over for 2011.

State Fair officials say the annual celebration in Fair Park definitely raked in the cash -- fair-goers spent more than $35 million on food and ride coupons, a figure slightly less than last year's all-time record of $37 million.

During the Saturday of the Texas-OU weekend, visitors brought in $3.9 million in coupon sales for 2011. That's a lot of fried bubblegum.

It wasn't all about the money for Big Tex and crew, though -- canned food donations topped 189,000 pounds, breaking last year's record, and a single day collection of 65,509 pounds of food also topped 2010's record.

The 125th State Fair of Texas also hosted a new world record as Guinness bestowed the honor on Mattress Firm for stacking 12 mattresses on top of each other and kept the stack up for one minute.

Already missing the Fair? Mark your calendars for Sept. 28 through Oct. 21, 2012, when the State Fair of Texas will return again to Fair Park.
