Meet Drew Barrymore at Urban Outfitters Wednesday

Actress in town to plug her directorial debut, 'Whip It'

Drew Barrymore will be at Urban Outfitters in Mockingbird Station Wednesday to promote her directorial debut Whip It -- not the stuff the wild girls did in bathroom stalls; it's a story about roller derby queens in Texas  -- according to Unfair Park. If you want to meet her, you'll pay for it with the hours you'll wait around: wristbands will be given out at 5:30 p.m., with Barrymore appearing at 7 p.m. She'll be flocked by the Dallas Derby Devils as the team christens her an honorary member of their crew. Barrymore will then sign copies of E.T. or Ever After or, you know, your killin' skates for starting at 7:15 p.m.

Whip It, based on Shauna Cross' novel Derby Girl and adapted for film by the same author, was shot in Austin, home of the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls and, coincidentally, a popular restaurant called Whip In that serves mostly Indian food. Ellen Page stars as the twangy-tongued Bliss Cavendar, an ex-pat of the beauty queen scene who's tough enough to join girls with nicknames like Malice in Wonderland (Kristen Wiig!) and Dinah Might (Juliette Lewis) in the rink. Drew Barrymore co-stars, and there's no Charlie's Angels reference in her nickname: Smashley Simpson. Let that sink in for a minute.

The Dallas Derby Devils and the Assassination City Roller Derby are the two premier roller derby gals groups in DFW. Watch both gangs for more promos as Whip It opens in theatres October 2. Check out the trailer below.
