Less Rocking, More Talking: NX35 Panels

Not every moment at NX35 will need earplugs. In fact, some of the best content will be panel discussions on everything from digital discs, eight-tracks, and Miley Cyrus.

THURSDAY

DFW, the Arts, and the Future
This panel is near and dear to our heart -- probably because it's continuing the discussion of our DFW 2020 piece on the future of independant, local artists. We're extra happy to see our Lyndsay Knecht Milne as the moderator of a panel that looks very similar to the one she put together for our piece. Glad to see that the discussion won't end after the cameras stop! 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Banter.

Where We Hear Local Music
Us "Media Types" just can't make it to every band's gig, so we have to look at other technological options to hear local stuff. (Personally, we love that locals put their stuff on YouTube and MySpace. It's really easy to acces from a cubicle!) Quite a number of our contemporaries will be part of this panel, including Sarah Crisman from Pegasus News, Mark Schectman from 102.1's "The Local Show," and the Dallas Observer's Pete Freedman. 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Banter.

FRIDAY

NX35 Keynote: Steve Albini
NX35's keynote will be with Steve Albini whose work on Nirvana's "In Utero" and The Pixies' "Surfer Rosa" is well known to the DIY rock fans. Albini's career and massive recording portfolio will be ripe for some sure-to-be-interesting ancedotes and sagely wisdom for the up-and-comers. 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Hailey's

From the Physical to the Digital
Vinyl may be a better sound, but it sure can't fit into your back pocket. That's why this discussion from legal experts, recording artists, and archivists will be an interesting take on the analog/digitial issues. 3 to 4 p.m. at Dan's Silver Leaf.

Drink and Think: Is Midlake Better Than Miley Cyrus?
Kevin Roden has been putting on these Drink and Think sessions for a while now, and we're pretty partial to the idea of gathering some inquiring minds around a heady discussion with a heady stout as an accessory. This instance will feature an extra cerebral question, "Is pop music better than indie fare?" Get ready to argue from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dan's Silver Leaf.

The Eight Track Museum
Believe it or not, the eight track tape is now 45 years old. Remember these odd pieces of music history with Earotica Music owner and music producer Bucks Burnett as he brings his eight track tape collection to Denton as "The Eight Track Museum." Burnett has tapes from The Beatles and Elvis box sets, plus rare sealed tape from the Velvet Underground and The Rutles. Even cooler are the signed tapes from Led Zeppelin and cartoonist Robert Crumb. On Friday, the museum opens at 7 p.m. with a performance from Brave Combo.

On Sunday, Burnett will present a lecture on the history of the eight track and tour the museum at 2 p.m.

SATURDAY

The Ever-Shifting Live Music Landscape in DFW
A collected panel of booking agents, show producers, and industry thinkers discuss the changing role of artists from simply performers to booking agents, publicity generators, and promoters via social networking. The panel will meet at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The Changing Nature of Music Journalistm
Current music writers join this panel to discuss how print and internet media currently cover music. Most of the discussion will likely be around the topic of how blogs influence professional music journalism in more traditional media. Catch the panel at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

SUNDAY

Words and Music By:
A gaggle of Denton's songwriters, poets and authors will gather in the basement of Recycled Books for a full half-day of spoken word and musical performances. The event runs from noon to 6 p.m. Check out the entire lineup at this link.

40 Bands/80 Minutes!
This experimental film includes 40 L.A. bands joining together to make two minutes of music each using all shared equipment for a live, multiple camera, one-take film that features bands like HEALTH, I Heart Lung, and others. Screening at Dan's Silver Leaf from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Many Songs Told:
The Boiler Room will host this community listening party featuring songs selected and introduced by...you! Choose one song to share, give it up to the man behind the decks, and get ready to explain why that track is important to you. Event runs from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
