Fall in Love With the Dallas Desire

The Dallas Desire may sound like the latest club in uptown Dallas where you can shake your moneymaker, but it's not.

It's North Texas' contribution to the Lingerie Football League, and these girls may look good, but they can kick your you-know-what.

The LFL started as a gimmick of sorts -- sexy women playing football in next-to-nothing -- but it has evolved into competitive league with 10 teams from around the country.

"Basically, it's a spin-off of the Lingerie Bowl, which was the one game a year during the Super Bowl halftime show on pay-per-view," said Linda Brenner, quarterback. "And that blew up, and they decided to make a full league out of it last year."

You may also recognize the one of the men coaching the team: former New York Giants player and Louisiana State University grad Clarence LeBlanc. You might say he fell into the job.

"Well, me and my buddy were out watching, and we helped a girl out last year," said LeBlanc. "They were like, 'Can we get you to help out?' So we helped out, and the owner liked what we were doing and coaching the girls, giving them proper techniques, so that is how we became the coach."

New on the team this year is Nikki Spinato. The rookie is looking forward to getting on the field and making some plays at the Cotton Bowl.

"I don't know if I can take a hit yet, so nobody tackle me," said Spinato. "But I think it is going to be fun, though. We will see once the pads get on how rough it really gets. As of right now, I think I will be all right."

Quarterback Brenner is the true leader of the team on and off the field. This is her second season with the Desire. Brenner is passionate about the sport, playing the game and the women she takes the field with.

"We just finished our training camp, we watched film, we studied the playbook -- I mean, the whole nine yards," said Brenner. "We have agility training, strength and conditioning, we are on the field, so it's definitely serious."

The players come from all walks of life, but most of them are college athletes, including softball players, basketball players, track runners and cheerleaders. And for those of you who don't think this a "real" sport, consider the following.

"It's a very competitive sport. A lot of times people think just because it's models, we are not playing full-on tackle, we're not hitting each other hard, but we are college athletes, so we are out there to do the real thing," said Toni Kelley, cornerback and defensive line. "You can be pretty, and you can come out here and play just as tough as any girl."

The Dallas Desire season opener is Sept. 3, at the Cotton Bowl. They'll be taking on the San Diego Seduction.

If you can't catch that game, then the team plays its second and final home game of the year on Jan. 21, 2011 -- also at the Cotton Bowl.
