ACOUSTIC SOUL SINGER: Singer song-writer Justin Nozuka is the Canadian native with passionate lyrics and guitar stringing talent. Nozuka’s music is a combination of folk, acoustic rock, and soul – the soul can definitely be heard on my personal favorite Nozuka track “After Tonight” from his 2007 album “Holly” (named after his mother). Nozuka’s lyrics are anything but meaningless. His songs tell (fictional) stories, from “Save Him” about a woman abused by her husband to “Down in a Cold Dirty Well” about his reflection of life before his eyes. His new album “You I Wind Land and Sea” was released in April he’s currently on tour. Nozuka’s familiar with the Lone Star State – after performing in Austin in the SXSW Music Festival – and is back tonight, only this time in the “Big D” with Alex Cuba and Ry Cuming at House of Blues Dallas 8 p.m. Check him out. Seriously, you’ll be glad you did.
ASIAN SENSATION: From his laugh out loud appearances on E!’s Chelsea Lately – even touring with her at one point – to his offbeat comparisons of Latinos and Asians, Jo Koy pokes fun at himself and everyone around him. The energetic Filipino started on the stand-up road in Vegas performing at a local coffee house to performing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live, BET’s Comic View, Last Call with Carson Daily, and you get the picture. Jo Koy’s “no holds barred” attitude and ad lib performances make him one comic worth watching. Lucky for Dallas, he’s in town tonight performing at the Addison Improv.
THEATRE ART: If tonight you want to just enjoy a good live show full of drama, head to the Garland Civic Center for the play “My Cousin Rachel” directed by Kyle McClaran. The stage play is a recreation of Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name. The story is set in a Cornwall, England home that was just inherited by Philip Ashley after the death of his uncle (who was also his surrogate father). And when “cousin” Rachel visits a love hate relationship soon ensues between the two. The show runs until September 11.
