WHIP OUT THE LEDERHOSEN: Spend the weekend in Addison drinking lager, polka dancing and picking up a few German phrases other than the classic fahrvergnugen – oh, and did we mention drinking. Tonight marks the first night of the weekend long Oktoberfest at Addison Circle Park and it’s the only evening anyone gets in for free – that’s right, free from 6 p.m. – 11p.m. The German festival will kick-off with Addison mayor Joe Chow tapping the first keg on Friday (it’s how they do it in Germantown) to commence the welcoming of all the beer and bratwurst you can stomach. In the midst of the all drinking, pay a visit to some of the events including a 5K run, the Dachshund (wiener dog) parade and races, “German Idol” yodeling competition, and the not to be missed “Bier Barrel Rolling” contest – there will also be some fun stuff for the kiddies. The smorgasbord Oktoberfest menu just keeps on going until Sunday.
GRAPES, GRAPES ALL OVER THE PLACE: If beer is not your thang or maybe you just want to switch it up – there’s nothing like a glass of vino to top off your meal. This weekend how about several glasses paired with every delectable bite? We thought you’d say yes. While Germany takes over Addison, grape stomping begins today in where else but Grapevine for the 24th Annual Grapefest. With nonstop entertainment taking over Downtown Grapevine, this Grapefest is no joke! Sample wine from all across Texas, enjoy the sounds of everything from jazz to rock on one of the six stages throughout the festival grounds. And no Grapefest is complete without the Grape Stomping Competition “I Love Lucy” style. It’s free today and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., after that it costs to sample the tasty grapes (click here for exact times).
VIVA INDEPENDENCE: Celebrate the passion, the struggle and the strength of El Grito (Mexico’s Bicentennial Independence). Teatro Dallas marks the 200th anniversary celebration at the Latino Cultural Center hosted by Gloria Campos. The evening of merriment and commemoration begins with cocktails, and then continues with a silent auction accompanied by a dramatic performance of two love torn fighters for Mexico’s independence in “Leona Vicario.” The festivities begin at 7 p.m.
