8/21-8/22: Fun In The Sun

This weekend fight heart disease, catch a concert, and laugh it up

KNOCKOUT OBESITY: The convenience of unhealthy fast food and less physical activity has caused an obesity epidemic across the United States. Today, join boxing great and former Light Heavy Weight Champion, Roy Jones Jr. as he teams up with the American Heart Association for the Power Up! Event to raise awareness about how fun healthy living can be. Jones Jr. is an advocate for childhood obesity and wants to educate the DFW community on the importance of healthy nutrition and fun exercises for the entire family. The Power Up! Event lasts from 9 a.m. – 1pm. on Saturday at the Antioch Fellowship Baptist Church in Dallas.

CONCERT IN THE PARK: Whip out the blanket, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets for a family summer night at the Keller Back to School Bash and Concert in the Park featuring Dallas native Eddie Coker. Known for singing child-friendly tunes on Radio Disney, Coker has recorded hundreds of songs for little ears and their families and now will be entertaining under the Texan sky at Bear Creek Park in Keller. So, before the kids head back to school and get bogged down with homework and pop quizzes, grab the whole family this Saturday and enjoy a night of games, prizes, and good music. The merriment lasts from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m. And, bonus, it’s a night of free family fun.

GET IN GRIER: Comedian and actor David Alan Grier, known for his work on the sketch comedy show In Living Color and acting in movies like In The Army Now, will be performing at the Addison Improv. Known for his humor, Grier has a dramatic background, graduating from Yale with and MFA in drama. He was also seen flexing his dancing muscles in season eight’s Dancing with the Stars. Grier recently published a book entitled "Barack Like Me: The Chocolate Covered Truth," which combines sharp wit and profound thought about the nation’s first black president. He’ll put his stand-up skills to the test this Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
