8/20: Laugh, Play, ROCK!

A little comedy, a lot of Bollywood, and some musical Texan talent

LAUGH OUT LOUD: Comedy at its finest, unscripted and unpredictable with an abundance of audience participation. Hey, at least it isn’t some cheesy hack on stage crackin’ fat jokes at you. Improvisation is much more than that – the audience can poke fun at the comics too, on stage.  Ad-Libs, an American Comedy Improv Troupe graces the Mouth (no pun intended) stage in Dallas, tonight. They’ll be performing a unique blend of improv, video, and a wee bit of scripted humor in a cabaret style theater. Show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $18 with reservations, $20 without.

GOOD GOLLY GREEK BOLLY: What do you get when you combine men and women dukin’ it out over which sex is the most intelligent? Throw in some extravagant dance numbers, vibrant costumes and just a pinch of Greek storyline – Give up?  How about A Bollywood Lysistrata showing at KD Studio Theatre (in case you’re wondering Lysistrata means “she who disbands armies). The performance is a retelling of Aristophanes’ Ancient Greek comedy about a classic battle of the sexes only this time set in India – complete with singing, dancing, and over-the-top production. The show is a product of Level Ground Arts, written and choreographed by Andi Allen, running through Sept. 5. Show starts at 8:15 p.m.

LONE STAR ROCKERS: The band Sam Silva and the Good has a name that sort of sounds like an old country western film. They are in fact western, southwestern to be exact – based in Austin.  Sam Silva and The Good are homegrown talent, guitar slinging their way through Texas mixing rock and blues with the good ol’ sound of country.  The band’s first album “See You Around” was released in 2008 and garnered much attention from critics like Texas Music Magazine, which associated the band’s music to “channel[ing] the best of The Band and the Counting Crows.” Find out for yourself when Sam Silva and the Good play at Woody’s Tavern in Fort Worth tonight at 9 p.m.
