4/13: Free Thought

INTERPLANETARY PARTNERS: A landmark figure of the women's rights movement talks gender equality? Well sure, dudes, and you might should listen. Change maker Gloria Steinem, 76, has fed other causes like the fights against child abuse and racism during her stunningly productive life. UT Dallas brings her to campus for a presentation called Women and Men: A Partnership for the 21st Century. Make sure to register here before attending. Free. 6PM.

OASIS: Ben Fountain's commentary on Dallas in his essay for the Dallas Morning News (Haiti's humanity holds lesson for Dallas' elusive soul, 1/17/10) drew us to his harrowing, sole-thinning stories, which travel around the world harvesting purpose just as his nonfiction does. The author of Brief Encounters With Che Guevara: Stories who called Dallas the "Vatican city of the prosperity Gospel" (he lives in the area) will read at the University of North Texas' Golden Eagle Suite. Free. 8PM.

NOT-SO-SILENT SPRING: Echo Theatre presents the world premiere of Appalachian Geisha by Kim Stimson, a finalist in the org's competition for new female playwrights called Big Shout Out!. This work explores "butterfly dreams, sea vegetables, and Emperor's Mark Green Tea" as catalysts for refreshing a 35-year marriage, which is apparently surreal as the years go by. Free. 7:30PM at Bath House Cultural Center.
