New At Good Records This Week

Our most anticipated releases this week purport to share the virtues of front-porch sits and long, reflective drives with Good Records patrons who like secrets, well-kept or not:

Iron & Wine: Around the Well (Sub Pop)
Any Iron & Wine song feels like a rarity, even the one we've worn out on mix CD playlists. This new 2-CD, 3-LP collection of unreleased and hard-to-find songs should be welcomed by those who've memorized Sam Beam's every as-yet uttered lyric. The band offers a download of "The Trapeze Swinger," from the In Good Company soundtrack, for a taste -- the collection puts the track out on vinyl for the first time.

Magnolia Electric Company: It's Made Me Cry single (Secretly Canadian)
All proceeds from the purchase of the It's Made Me Cry 7" as well as today's Itunes release of the EP will be passed to a memorial fund for the family of Evan Farrell, a bassist/pedal steelist who toured with MEC and played bass for Rogue Wave who died after he was hurt in a fire in 2007. The EP was originally released on a limited basis to celebrate Record Store Day last month. It's the first new material from Houston-based Jason Molina and his band since 2006, a sobering measure of time and a comfort for fans all the same.

John Vanderslice: Romanian Names (Dead Oceans)
John Vanderslice's pre-release flirtations with the media paid off in advance of his latest: NPR called Romanian Names Vanderslice's "best record yet" after he leaked the whole thing for NPR Music's Exclusive First Listen series See Vanderslice play the album's title track at Seattle's KEXP studios below.
