New At Good Records: Eels, Elvis Costello

Eels wail electric and Elvis Costello rolls in bluegrass with new releases dropping Tuesday at Good Records.

Eels: Hombre Lobo (Vagrant)
When you know the album's a winner, you can stream the whole thing straight from your band's Myspace page before it drops. That's just what Eels have done with their latest, a foot-stomper to energize critics who poured out praise for 2005's acclaimed Blinking Lights and Other Revelations and subsequently fell asleep to the record. On Hombre, the electric tunes rock harder and the low-key tracks get a groove injection; "The Look You Give That Guy" approaches U2's "In a Little While" for the song most unlikely to have been written by a white dude decades after the reigning era of Motown soul.

Elvis Costello: Secret, Profane & Sugarcane (Hear Music)
Ten previously unrecorded songs grace Elvis Costello's whiskey-soaked return to acoustic. Grammy winner T Bone Burnett, known for producing the O, Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack and heading up music production while composing the soundtrack for Walk The Line and turning banjos to gold with a glance, produced Costello's Secret Profane & Sugarcane in Nashville. Samples of the album are, um, well, staggering. The LA Times has a review here. Below is footage from Costello's first public performance of "Down Among the Wines and Spirits" at The Bob Dylan Show in 2007.
