Dallas Derby Devils Do it on Skates

When you think about roller skating, what comes to mind? Bad 70's music, a disco ball, couple's choice and kid's birthday parties?

Well throw that image out of the window and get out your lip gloss because this isn't your mother's Saturday night.

The women of The Dallas Derby Devils, are tough, athletic, highly competitive and ready to kick some you know what.

"It's actually tougher because back in the day it was sort of like wrestling," said Scary with the Dallas Derby Devils. "Now it is a full contact sport. It's flat track, so it's going to make it faster."

The flat track roller derby league was formed back in November, 2004, with a group of female athletes who enjoyed skating.

Now there are over 90 active skaters who are divided into five teams, making the Dallas Derby Devils the largest flat track roller derby league in the south.

"These girls, they do this two hours, everyday, Sunday through Wednesday, twice a month," said June Carter Crash, general manager with the Derby Devils. "Then they have additional practices, so you are looking at probably about 15 hours of skating a week."

With names like "The Slaughterers," "The High Seas Hotties," "The Wrecking Crew," "The Suicide Shifters," and "The Death Row Rumblers,"  it's hard not to be intrigued with the sport.

"It's actually the fastest growing female sport in the world right now," said Scary.

Select women from all five teams also make up the Dallas Derby Devils All-Star Travel Team who compete year round against teams from around the United States.
